Rio Medina

Obituary

Walter Alex Wood, of Rio Medina, Texas, passed away June 10, 2026 at the age of 52. He was born January 17, 1974 in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Bill Darwin Wood and Kathleen Marie Wood. He lived in Portland, Texas until 2000 when he moved to his family's ranch in Rio Medina, Texas where he and his cousin Frankie Kauffmann continued the family stock farming legacy.

Walter graduated in 1992 from Gregory Portland High School and then attended Texas A&I in Kingsville. He enjoyed football, hunting, fishing, and being with friends and family. He was an excellent knife maker and would forge blades at his home. He was a volunteer firefighter in Portland, Texas as well as in Castroville.

Walter took immense pride in his work and devoted much of his life to the construction industry. He began his career working alongside his father at WE Inc., where he learned the value of hard work, integrity, and dedication.

Later, he joined another family, Casias Construction, as a Project Superintendent. To him, work was never just a job – it was an extension of family. He deeply valued the relationships he built with coworkers, subcontractors, and clients. His leadership, loyalty, and genuine care for others earned him the respect and friendship of all who had the privilege of working beside him.

Survivors include the love of his life, Jessica; mother, Kathleen Wood of Rio Medina; sisters, Sheila Tauferner (Dustin) of Salado and Jill Hrbacek (Scot) of Salado; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Walter was preceded in death by his father, Bill Darwin Wood.
