Obituary

Vivian Tschirhart Canty was born May 3, 1930, to Robert Tschirhart and Elizabeth Bohl Tschirhart of Castroville, Texas. In 1945, the family moved into their home on Lorenzo St. in Castroville. This home would serve as a gathering place for many family functions. In that year, the family also lost their beloved Ruby Tschirhart Mangold. With this loss, Vivian gained a baby niece, Fran, who became like her baby sister. Vivian was very proud of all of her brothers and sisters. She often shared the memory of her older brother, Sonny, going off to fight in World War II. She recalled standing along Hwy. 90 and waving goodbye to him and the convoy of local soldiers on their way to San Antonio. Vivian was also proud of her brother Lewis, who served our country in the Korean and Vietnam War. Vivian enjoyed a close relationship with her older sisters: Ellen, Ruby, Mabel, and Bernice. She was also close to and loved by her many nieces and nephews, who lovingly called her Meme. Being the youngest of her siblings, Meme was not much older than some of her nieces. She would often fix their hair, help plan their birthday parties, and help them pick out clothes. Fran recalls that when she was in high school, Meme brought her new clothes that she would wear on dates. Meme was especially close to her nieces, Yvonne, Claudia, and Francine. As she grew older, the three of them would lovingly take care of her.

Vivian graduated from St. Louis High School in 1949. In 1951, she gave birth to her son, Danny. After Danny's birth, the family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. After living in Corpus Christi, she and her family moved to Austin, Texas. While living in Austin, Vivian was blessed with the birth of her grandson, Blaine. She worked for and retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone and the State of Texas.

Vivian loved to cook, and she was excellent. She had a dream of one day gathering all of her favorite family recipes along with recipes from her friends and writing a cook book.  This dream came true in 1987 when she published Vivian's Collection of Favorite Recipes.

In 2001, Vivian moved back to her hometown of Castroville. For many of her 20 years living in Castroville, she lived in her childhood home on Lorenzo St. During this time, she was able to reconnect with friends and family. She joined Bunco groups, went out to eat with friends, and joined the St. Ann's Society. She was also able to once again become a parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Church. Vivian was very strong in her faith. Every night, she would pray the Holy Rosary. While praying, she would ask God for his blessing and protection over her loved ones.

Vivian went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 22, 2024. She is survived by her son, Danny Canty and his wife, Millie of Burnet, Texas and her grandson, Blaine Canty of Clinton, Utah.

In heaven, she reunited with her parents and siblings. She will be missed by so many.

Until we meet again, rest in peace, Meme.
