Obituary

On December 1st, 2022, Virginia (Ginny) Wheaton Hallager, beloved wife, mother, grandma, aunt, great aunt, and friend passed away with her husband of 58 years at her side. She is survived by her husband, Donald; her daughter, Kathi Barden (David); son, Michael; granddaughter, Lindsay Hoisington; nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and beloved friends too numerous to count.

Ginny's faith was the foundation of her life. She loved Jesus and didn't go a day without letting you know that. She led many women's bible study groups which taught and encouraged everyone who was a part of them. She was a speaker for Christian Women's club and traveled to speak and share her faith with thousands of women during that time in her life. She served the Lord faithfully for most of her life and many would credit her faith as the inspiration for their own faith journey.

Ginny was born in Montclair, New Jersey on August 18, 1942. She later moved to Lincoln, Nebraska with her mom after her parents divorced. She attended the University of Nebraska where she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, which brought lifelong sisterhood and summer reunions over the course of 60 years. When she graduated from college, she met a dashing Air Force pilot at Lincoln Air Force Base who would become her life-long sweetheart. She completed Officer Candidate School and Naval Justice School as an Ensign and then married Donald Hallager in December of 1964. She became pregnant during one of their "whirlwind rendezvous", which was her ticket out of the Navy. She joined Don in Bellevue, Nebraska and traded her Navy Blue for Air Force Blue as his wife. She would soon become mother to Katherine and Mike, and grandma to Lindsay.

Family was at the center of all that Ginny cared about. While she had many activities, extracurriculars, and accomplishments in her life, the people involved were what brought her the most joy. Her deep love for her husband, Don, her dedication to her children Kathi and Mike, her closeness with her granddaughter Lindsay, her personal relationships with in-laws and distant relatives, and her adoption of many people as honorary family members created a legacy that her survivors hope to carry on. Even the friends she made along the way were family to her. Through handwritten cards, documenting details and photographs of precious moments, trips across the world, weekly zoom-calls, yearly reunions, and spontaneous phone-calls, she continuously maintained and nurtured all of the relationships in her life.

Ginny's passions and accomplishments were too numerous to count. Her interests included (but were not limited to) music, choir, genealogy, traveling, sewing, dancing, tennis, recorder, mahjong, and golf (in which she scored two "hole-in-one's", of which Don is still trying to achieve). She made deep relationships in every activity she did and was an integral member of every community, church, and group she was a part of, especially at Blue Skies of Texas, where her and Don retired to and have called home for the past 12 years.

As an Air Force wife, Ginny served on many committees and dedicated her life to supporting her husband, thus supporting her country. One of the most profound ways she served was as an "Arlington Lady" for over 25 years in Washington D.C.  She had the honor of representing the Air Force at Arlington National Cemetery funerals.

Anyone who knew Ginny would tell you that she was sharp-minded, selfless, passionate, expressive, and a servant at heart, always looking for ways to take care of those around her. Her joy was contagious, and the love she had for her family and friends was fierce and loyal. Though her loss is a great one to all who knew her, it is truly Heaven's gain. Her light will continue to shine through the legacy she left us and the memories we share.

A Celebration of life will be held at Blue Skies of Texas – West campus in the High Flight Chapel at 2 PM on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.  We are in the process of setting up a memorial in Ginny's name with Kappa Kappa Gamma in Lincoln. Details to follow.
