Sherill Ray
'Butch' Reus
Jun 29, 1940 — Jul 19, 2025
San Antonio
Sherill Ray Reus, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 19th 2025, in San Antonio at the age of 85. He was born on June 29th 1940 in Castroville to Rudolph and Lenora Halty Reus.
Known as Butch by family members and local residents, he grew up on the family farm in La Coste with three brothers. By the age of ten, Butch was driving the family tractor, helping his father to farm their land, planting oats, wheat, and sorghum. He attended schools in La Coste, graduating from La Coste High School in May 1958. He was a member of FFA throughout school, raising hogs and chickens, some of which he showed at the San Antonio Livestock Show. He was also a member of the La Coste Eagles football, basketball and baseball teams during all four years of high school. He held several officer positions in classes and organizations. After graduation, he held various jobs: home construction with Ray Ellison Homes, manager of a Mobil Gas Station, and Manager of Braytex Oil Refinery. In 1962, he enlisted in the Air Force Reserves and served for six years.
Butch married Karen Lee Eggen from Hondo on June 12th, 1964. They lived in San Marcos while both pursued their college educations. He attended Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, working part time with the San Marcos Telephone Company, installing office equipment and telephones for the entire college campus. After graduation, Butch was employed by CPS in San Antonio in Fuels Planning and Commercial Sales. He left CPS in 1978 to work for Gulf Energy as a Gas Buyer and eventually became self-employed in the Natural Gas Gathering industry.
Butch was always known for his friendliness and positive attitude. He was well known for his energetic stamina on the dance floor. He enjoyed being active and had a very creative mind, designing several unique pieces of equipment for his gas gathering business. He loved sports, both as a participant and as a coach for his son's sports teams.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Karen; son, Todd (Denise); son-in-law, Ruben; grandchildren, Julian (Karen) Arredondo, Riley Arredondo, Maci Gunderman, Aaden Reus, and Addison Reus; brother, Robert (Rita); sister-in-law, Sally Reus; two nieces, four nephews, three great nieces, and numerous cousins.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Lenora Halty Reus; brothers, Malcolm and Rodney Reus; daughter, Tracey Reus Arredondo; sister-in-law, Anna Beth Eggen Wynne; and niece, Cindy Reus.
Butch will sincerely be missed by all of our family. We are extremely thankful for all of the prayers of support from everyone whose lives have been touched in some way by his love for people and life. A special thank you to all of the caregivers and staff who assisted him during his brief stay in memory care.
