Richard George 'Dickie' Mangold, 85 of La Coste, TX, passed away on March 4, 2024 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Born July 6, 1938, in San Antonio, TX, he was the son of Alida and George Mangold. He attended Jefferson High School in San Antonio.
After high school, Dickie began his rodeo career. He started as a bareback and bull rider before finding his main event was bulldogging. He competed at many rodeos including Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Pecos. He won a round at San Antonio and was the West of the Pecos Rodeo bulldogging champion in 1971. He passed on his love of rodeo to all four of his children as competitors and spectators.
While rodeoing he entered the sheet metal trade working his way up from apprentice to the Local 67 Union Business Agent. Dickie often talked about the many buildings in San Antonio he hung duct work in and enjoyed sharing many stories from his 50+ year membership in the Union and the many friends he made. He valued those friendships.
After a successful career, Dickie retired early to live his dream of being a full-time cattleman. He owned and operated DM Cattle Company, providing fat cattle for slaughter. He loved to attend livestock auctions weekly to "shoot the bull" with many of his friends and to see what deals he could find. At the Hondo Livestock Auction, he found his best deal ever and married her in 1995 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo, Texas. Carol Schmidt Mangold and Dickie enjoyed twenty-eight years of marriage centered around their love of ranching and family. Dickie had a strong work ethic, was proud to support his family, loved the Lord and never shied away from telling a story.
Dickie is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Monte and Bobbie Mangold; and his in-laws, Ottalie and Chester Schmidt.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Schmidt Mangold; his children, Lanham (Marla) Mangold, Leyton (Michele) Mangold, Richelle Mangold, and Tricia (Steven) Chatham; grandchildren, Logan (Avalon) and Trent Mangold, Kandi, Korey, Kolton (Allie), and Kingston Mangold, Kyon (Blake) Chandler, Keydon Walter, Maddy and Cash Chatham; great-grandchildren, Grayson and Callum Mangold, Emmie Mangold, Doc Mangold, and Blakelyn Chandler; and his sister Alida Ann Rappe.
