Obituary

Mary Margaret Burges, age 100, died peacefully in her sleep on October 25, 2021. She was born in San Antonio, Texas to the late John H. Morris and Mamie Jefferson Guinn Morris.

On February 26, 1944, Mary Margaret married Ellis G. Burges at her parent's home in Bexar County, Texas. They were married sixty-nine years at the time of his death in 2013.

Mary Margaret and Ellis were very active in the Castroville Colonies Heritage Association and were instrumental in forming the Alsatian Dancers of Texas. She was a long-time teacher, starting in a two-room schoolhouse and working her way up to the head of the math department. She taught many grade levels from kindergarten to college, but math was her favorite subject to teach.

She was involved in the Castroville Chamber of Commerce, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She owned and operated Medina Valley Greenhouses for decades, specializing in everything from "Cactus to Orchids." She had two goals: to live to be 100, (done !), plus develop some personal characteristics; (she felt she needed more work on that one!).

Survivors include her children, Elisabeth "Bettie" Lee Wilson (Kevin) of San Antonio, William "Bill" R. Burges O.D. (Mary Lou) of Castroville; grandchildren, Robb Jefferson Wilson of Castroville, Erin L. Bunch (Rev. Mark) of Bridge City, Texas, Maj. Jeff Burges (Emily) of Vecenza, Italy, Christina Mamie Burges of Castroville, Joanna Linton (Ryan) of Arvada, Colorado, Matthew Chestnut (Ruth) of Chandler, Arizona, and Becca Weikel (John) of Lumberton, Texas. Mary Margaret adored her twelve great-grandchildren, Thomas Ellis Bunch, Elizabeth Mamie Bunch, Kaitlyn Burges, David Ellis Burges, Caroline Burges, Samantha Linton, Molly Linton, Caleb Weikel, Lydia Weikel, Abby Weikel, Jesse Chestnut, and Chloe Chestnut. She had loving cousins by the dozens, wonderful nieces and nephews, as well as many close friends.

Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, John H. and Mamie Morris; her husband, Ellis G. Burges; and her brother, John G. Morris.
