Mary Evans
Kolar
Aug 3, 1945 — May 10, 2020
San Antonio
It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt and friend, Mary Anita Evans Kolar. She was called home to Heaven on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, 2020, at the age of 74.
Mary was born on August 3, 1945 and grew up in Irving, Texas. She was the third of six children born to John Thomas "Tommy" and Lurlene Evans. She graduated from Irving High School and attended Midwestern State University. Mary married Marvin Daniel Kolar on February 10, 1968. Following their marriage, she and Marvin moved to San Antonio, Texas, where they remained. Mary and Marvin were parishioners of Saint Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church while living in San Antonio. For many years, Mary volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister administering Sunday Holy Communion, taught Holy Communion classes (CCD program), and worked with the youth group.
With her husband, Marvin, Mary devoted more than twenty-five years of volunteer service to the Geronimo Village Volunteer Fire Department, which would later go on to be the Bexar County District 2 Fire Department. In addition to her volunteer work, Mary made a career for herself working in the insurance industry. She was a hard worker, devoted employee, and retired in 2011 after many years of service with The Hartford. Throughout retirement, she maintained close friendships with several of her friends from The Hartford.
Mary and Marvin adopted three children; John, Shayla, and Kristen. Mary was devoted to her family, to her dear friends, and to all who knew her. Mary and Marvin were married for fifty years, until Heavenly Father called him home on November 6, 2018. When Marvin died, Mary mourned his loss deeply, but she was grateful to be surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends. Despite Mary and Marvin's many roles in this life, they found their greatest role and calling in being loving grandparents to their grandchildren. To their great joy, they were blessed with three grandchildren; Ezra, Maggie, and Noëlle. For Mary, her family, particularly her grandchildren, were what kept her going despite the terrible grief she experienced in losing her loving companion.
In Mary's spare time, she enjoyed traveling to Dallas to visit her family members with whom she remained very close to throughout her life. Mary, her son John and her sister Maggie entered their craft projects into the Big State Fair and won, as they were all very talented. Attending the State Fair on the opening day with John and Maggie, was one of Mary's greatest joys. Her crochet work was greatly admired by all, especially her grandchildren, who she would lovingly dedicate each item to. Mary's other hobbies included reading romance novels, watching General Hospital , playing games such as Mahjong, crossword puzzles, and Skip-Bo, swimming, going to town with her son, John; going out to lunch or coffee with her daughter, Kristen; and playing with or reading to her grandchildren. She had a great sense of humor that all were able to enjoy.
Survivors include her children, John Robert Kolar, Kristen Kolar Baker Prado (Joshua Aaron); three grandchildren, Ezra Matthias Daniel Baker, Mary Margaret "Maggie" Isabella Prado and Noëlle Elizabeth Grace Prado; sisters, Carol Evans Kingen, Margaret "Maggie" Evans Cole (Roy), Agatha Gayle Evans Wright; sister in-law, Debbie Evans; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Daniel Kolar; parents, John Thomas "Tommy" Evans and Lurlene Beaufford Evans; siblings, LaVerne Smithart and John Evans; in-laws, Bobby Smithart, Nate Kingen, Alphonse J. Kolar, Helen Klanika, Evelyn Smith and Irene Bailey.
Visitation will be held at Saint Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church, 6150 Roft Road, San Antonio, Texas 78253 on Thursday, May 21st at 12:00 p.m., followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 12:30 p.m. Due to COVID-19, masks must be worn and social distance of 6' must be maintained within the church during the funeral service.
