Obituary

Justin Alfred Jungman, age 81of Castroville, Texas, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2020. He died peacefully at his home in Castroville following complications due to a vehicle accident on September 24, 2019. He was born in Bexar County on March 22, 1939 to Wilfred Joseph and Laura Evelyn (Tschirhart) Jungman.

Justin graduated from St. Louis High School in 1957. He was a rancher as well as a store manager for Medina Valley Seed and Fertilizer. He was a lifetime member of St. Louis Catholic Church. On April 23, 1961, Justin married Claudia Nell Boubel at St. Louis Catholic Church.

Justin was a lifelong hunter and he hunted in southern Texas, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. A normal hunting trip would last approximately one month. It would start off by riding horseback at the Jenson ranch to herd the cattle from the mountain down to the valley prior to opening day of deer and elk season in Colorado. He hunted with many close friends in a huge army tent equipped with a wood cooking stove. Each year, hunting season would start mid-September and end the following year in January.

He loved ranching and made daily visits to the "Too High Ranch" until it was sold in 2018. He would stay at the ranch house when he was working on big projects. He would even take Claudia along when he spent the weekend.

Of his many hobbies ranging from bread making to arrowhead hunting, and fruit orchards, leather craft became his most enjoyable hobby. He learned his skills from his uncle Alton (Brutz) Tschirhart. He has crafted many quirts and whips and has a display of his handy work at The Institute of Texan Culture in San Antonio, Texas. Later in life, he relaxed in his recliner and taught himself how to play the guitar. He enjoyed playing old country songs.

Beginning in 1998, Justin started making yearly trips to Alsace. He became known as the "Alsatian Cowboy of Texas". He met relatives and made many new friends. Each year he would travel right before the grape harvest to help some of his friends. They looked forward to his visits and planned BBQ's for him, school visits and parades.

The one thing he is most famous for is his mastery of the Alsatian language. He was old enough to learn the original dialect as his first language. Because of his ability to speak the language, he was invited to many events to demonstrate his mastery of the language. He was invited to the University of Texas at Austin to be tested by a linguist and scored 100% on the translations from English to Alsatian. The linguist was amazed at his mastery since he had not heard many of these words being spoken since his own grandmother had spoken them to him.

Until he passed, his wit remained intact whether we liked it or not. If he thought a task could be managed, he would give it a try, even if he could not get out of bed that day.

Justin is preceded in death by his wife of forty-one years, Claudia Nell Jungman; his parents, Wilfred and Laura Jungman; his stepfather, George Muennink; his sister, Lorraine Whitwell and sister-in-law, Alma June Purvis Jungman.

He is survived by his children, Yvette De La Fuente and husband Hector of Pearson, Matthew Jungman and wife Shellie of Castroville, and Nick Jungman of Castroville; grandchildren, Gerald De La Fuente and wife Jae, Alicia De La Fuente, Steven De La Fuente, Bryan Mattson and wife Shannon, Jordan Jungman and wife Jessika, Zachary Jungman, and Jason Jungman and wife Katelyn and one great-grandchild, Connor Jungman; brothers, Jimmy Jungman of Hondo and Norman Jungman and wife Marie of Castroville.

Justin Jungman, "The Alsatian Cowboy of Texas" will be missed by many. Like he always said, "But, if anybody asks, tell them you don't know".
