Jose Lira Gonzales, of La Coste, passed away in San Antonio on March 2, 2021 at the age of 73. He was born June 11, 1947 in Catarina, Texas, one of thirteen children born to Antonio Estevan Gonzalez and Eudelia Lira Gonzalez.

After high school, Jose joined the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for four years, obtaining the rank of Sargeant.

On September 11, 1970, Jose married Gloria Chavez in San Antonio. This past September, Jose and Gloria celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Jose retired from his job after thirty-two years as a produce receiving clerk for the H.E.B. warehouse.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Gonzales of La Coste; sons, Jose C. Gonzales, Jr., (Christy) of San Antonio, Steven J. Gonzales (Lorraine) of San Antonio; daughter, Connie J. Gonzales of La Coste; brothers, Manuel Gonzales (Kathy), Arturo Gonzales (Debra), Juan Gonzales (Emma), Robert Gonzales (Annette); sisters, Alamar Duncan (Jesse), Lucia Mascorro (Elijio) and Sylvia Montreal.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Edelia Gonzalez; brothers, Antonio "Tony" Gonzales, Rudolfo "Rudy" Gonzales, Victor Gonzales and Ignacio "Chico" Gonzales; and his sister, Elida Ybarra.

Public Visitation will be Tuesday, March 9, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 5:00 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Castroville Community Cemetery in Castroville.
