James David Leonard, of Castroville passed away October 12, 2024 at the age of 90. He was born January 24, 1934 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to John J. Leonard and Joyce French Leonard.

James moved to Texas in 1939 at the age of five. In 1952, J.D. graduated from Central Catholic High School in San Antonio. He went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after high school and retired in 1996 after forty-two years with the company. From 1954 to 1956, James served in the United States Army.

On July 22, 1961, he married Margaret Evans at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in San Antonio. They raised their children in San Antonio until 1984, when they moved to Castroville. They were blessed with twenty-five years of marriage when Margaret passed away on March 28, 1987.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Mark and Ginger Leonard of Arlington, Mike and Elsa Leonard of Boerne, and Melissa and Troy Zinsmeyer of Castroville; grandchildren, Jennifer Cumpata (Eric), David Leonard (Mivie), Jason Leonard (Oralia), and Joshua Zinsmeyer (Adele); and great-grandchildren, Kylie Cumpata, Brooklyn Cumpata, Gauge Cumpata, Marshall Leonard, Weston Leonard, Sloane Zinsmeyer, and Brody Zinsmeyer.

James was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret Leonard; and his grandson, Kolby Zinsmeyer.

Visitation will be Monday, October 28, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home with the Holy Rosary recited at 5:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at St. Louis Catholic Church. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in Castroville, Texas.
