Harold Gregory
Keller
Oct 16, 1936 — Jan 13, 2022
San Antonio
Harold Gregory Keller, known to many as "Coach," went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 13, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 85. Harold was born October 16, 1936 in LaCoste, Texas, one of three children of Frank Joseph and Cecilia Tschirhart Keller. Siblings include brother, Ronald Keller (late wife Betty Rihn) and sister, Patsy Groff (Royce).
Harold married his high school sweetheart Velma Wurzbach on November 25, 1956. In their 65 years of marriage, they were blessed with five children, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
After graduating in 1955 from St. Louis High School in Castroville, Harold was drafted by the Cleveland Indians as a pitcher. After a career ending injury, he returned to Castroville and began his new career as a football and track coach and history, government and political science teacher beginning at his alma mater. He received his bachelor's degree from St. Mary's University in 1961 and his master's degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1978.
Harold dedicated 44 years of his life to teaching and coaching. After a coaching tenure at Mathis High School from 1961 to 1967, the family moved to San Antonio. Harold coached at Harlandale High School and then at Central Catholic High School, where his 1970 football team won the TCIL State Championship. In 1977, he began teaching and coaching at Eisenhower Middle School where he stayed until retiring in 2000.
After retirement, Harold enjoyed farming activities at the Wurzbach family farm near Rio Medina, Texas. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and playing cards. Harold joined the St. Louis Men's Society when he was sixteen years old, and served the society for seventy years. He is also a member of the Quihi Gun Club.
To quantify the lives "Coach" impacted throughout his career would be immeasurable. Even after his last lesson in the classroom, Coach continued to impart knowledge and wisdom to so many. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will benefit from his teachings the rest of their lives.
Survivors include his wife, Velma; five children: Donna Schneider (Stephen), Dean Keller (Janet), Scott Keller (Mindy), Jon Keller (Jody), and Jerilyn Keller; nine grandchildren: Kaleigh Scott (Jon) and Kasen Schneider (Caimbry), Garrett Keller (Taylor) and Reagan Hundley (Clayton), Clinton Keller (Nathan) and Carson Keller, Emily Hoffman, Garrison Keller and Jenna Cunningham (Teddy) and; great grandchildren: Kendall and Reed Keller (Garrett), Dean, Maddie and Jessie Hundley (Reagan), and baby girl Scott (Kaleigh) to be born this March.
Visitation will be Monday, January 24th from 4 to 7 pm at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, Castroville, Texas. The Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 am on Tuesday, January 25th at St. Louis Catholic Church, Castroville. Interment will follow the church services in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery. The St. Louis Catholic Church Bereavement Committee will be hosting a luncheon at the Braden Keller Community Center for family and friends after the Cemetery Committal Service.
