Obituary

Gus Albert Neumann Jr. was born July 23, 1931 and went home to be with the Lord June 7, 2024 at the age of 92. Gus was born at the Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio to Gus and Alice Bourquin Neumann. He grew up on the family farm near Rio Medina along with his sister, Anna Mae and brother, David.

Gus attended school in Rio Medina and at St. Louis Catholic School in Castroville until he reached age 13. He then went to Horace Mann Junior High School, then to San Antonio Vocational and Technical High School (now Fox Tech), graduating in 1948. While there, he was a member of the ROTC program, attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant.

After high school, Gus helped his dad on the farms in Macdona and Rio Medina. His sister introduced him to Frances Hutzler and they started dating. In 1952, he was drafted into the US Army and after a few months of training, he was on his way to Korea. His job there was to repair engines of equipment used for maintenance of air fields near Seoul. After ten months, he returned to the states and served the rest of his military time at Fort Wolters, Texas.

After discharge he found employment in San Antonio and became engaged to Frances. He worked for the City Water Board, which became San Antonio Water System, for 39 years as lead man on a meter truck, then foreman of a rotation maintenance crew and finally the last twenty-two years as supervisor of the meter repair shop.

Gus and Frances married June 19, 1954 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville and were blessed with almost seventy years of marriage. They built a home in Castroville in 1955 and moved in before the birth of their first child. He liked to say he was a ''jack of all trades and master of none" and proved it over and over by making additions to their home several times and doing all the plumbing, electrical and other repairs as they were needed. He loved to tinker with things that were broken and usually was able to fix them. "Don't buy a new one because I can fix this." They were blessed with four sons: Thomas, Robert, Mark, and Charles. Gus was always a farmer at heart and after his father died, he took care of the family farm in Rio Medina. By the time he and Frances retired in 1992, they had acquired the Hutzler farm east of Castroville and they spent time at their farm with their ostriches, emus and cattle. They loved to travel and visited every state and several European countries. They especially enjoyed visiting Alsace and the small river boat cruises on the Columbia, Rhine and Danube Rivers.

They spent time with their grandchildren and one of his favorite pastimes was tending to the yard. The grass was always green and well-trimmed.

Gus was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church; he was co-chairman of St. Louis Day Festival, served on the Parish Council and was a member of the Cemetery Board for many years. He has been a member of the St. Louis Men's Society since 1954.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Hutzler Neumann; children, Thomas, Robert and wife Carolyn, Mark, and Charles Neumann; grandchildren, Anthony and wife Alysha Neumann, Michael Neumann, Kendra and husband Shaquille Johnson, Kyle and wife Santana Neumann; great-grandchildren, Ayden, Ian, AJ, and River Neumann; sister-in-law, Alice Niedlinger.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Alice Neumann; sister, Anna Mae and husband Winfred Haegelin; and his brother, David Neumann.

The family would like to thank Medina Valley Health and Rehab. and All County Hospice for their loving care.
