Obituary

Enrico 'Eric' Sudy, 73, a San Antonio, Texas resident, passed away on Saturday, 22 October 2022, surrounded by his immediate family. He was born in a small town in Italy's Montova Province in 1949, where his American father, George, a Darby's Ranger, settled down after the War and married Eric's Italian mother, Innocenta. Eric was born on the top floor of the town's bakery and spoke only Italian until he was five.

At five years of age, Eric's father moved the family to Germany for a civil engineer position to help build American bases after the War. As a result of this move, his dad enrolled Eric in the American Dependent's school in Vogelweh, Germany, where he quickly learned English. Eric was proud that he was one of the very few that spent all 12 years of school at the American School in Kaiserslautern, (Volgelweh) Germany. After high school, he went to the United States for the first time to attend Western Washington State College in Bellingham, Washington, until he joined the Air Force in 1971. In 1972, he received a compassionate release from service because of his father's death. He returned to Ramstein Air Base to work at the Woodlawn Golf Course. He married his wife Carol in 1974 in San Antonio but returned again to Woodlawn Golf Course to continue his golf position.

As a PGA Professional, Eric managed three military golf courses over his career. These were: Muroc Lake Golf Course at Edwards AFB, California; Torrejon Golf Course, Torrejon Air Base in Spain; and Woodlawn Golf Course at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Excellence was his passion, as he received Golf Course manager of the Year for the Air Force multiple times. In 1997, he moved to San Antonio to lead golf operations at all 65 Air Force golf courses across the globe until his retirement in 2010.

He loved golf, visiting family, and traveling the world with his brother. Eric was also extremely passionate about photography, his dogs, movie-making, and car racing.

Eric leaves behind his wife, Carol, his brother, Don and Don's wife, Sarah, and his dear Italian cousins and aunts he loved.

Eric's ashes will return to Italy the first week of January 2023 for funeral services in the Italian town where he was born and interred in the family crypt.

There will be a Celebration of Life in San Antonio at the Ft Sam Houston Golf Course on TUESDAY, 15 NOVEMBER, from 3 to 5 pm.
