Von Ormy

Obituary

Elsie June Goff Masters, of Von Ormy, passed away on January 31, 2021 at the age of 86 years. She was born October 16, 1934 in Houston County, Texas to Henry Goff and Myrtle Scott Goff.

June grew up in Kerrville, Texas and moved to San Antonio, TX in the early 50's with her best friend Loretta "Lumpo" Treadwell to "spread her wings" as Loretta put it.

June loved to dance to country western music and that love of dancing led her to her lifelong love and husband, Donald "Don" L Masters of Castroville, TX. They first met at the Circle B Dance Hall in San Antonio and later crossed paths in Bandera, TX at The Cabaret Dance Hall, where they each discovered a wonderful dance partner that would later be a wonder life partner.

On February 12, 1955, after about two years of burning up the dance floors in and around San Antonio, they eloped and got married in Seguin, TX where they could apply for a license and get married the same day.

Don and June continued to live in San Antonio but also spent time in Cotulla, Texas where Don's construction job would take them. Don was drafted in the Army 1958, and after ten weeks of basic training June sold the RV they had been living in and packed everything she could in the '54 Oldsmobile and headed out to meet him where he was stationed at Fort Irwin in Barstow, California. While living in Barstow, June got her first banking job at a Bank of America branch. Money was tight back in those days, but Don said those were the best of times in their young lives. They made many fond memories with his Army buddy, Don Cogwell and his wife Rosie.

In 1960 Don's Army stint was over, so they decided it was time to come back home and soon after started a family. They briefly lived in Castroville and during that time June gave birth to their first son, Donald L Masters Jr., in 1964. Soon after, they moved to Von Ormy, Texas and at that time June started back to work in the banking industry joining Frost Bank in the late 60's where she retired from after more than twenty-five years. Don and June settled permanently near the community of Somerset in 1967. Three years, later their second son, Randall R Masters, was born in 1970.

Don and June settle into their domestic lives, raising their two sons and enjoying their four grandchildren.  As the "dance hall" days of their youth faded into the past they never forgot how to "cut a rug" on the dance floor at weddings and family gatherings.

Survivors include her husband of sixty-five years, Donald L. Masters, Sr.; sons, Donald L. Masters, Jr. (Janis) and Randy Masters (Alma); grandchildren, Randall Masters, Jr., Samantha Masters, Brandon Masters and Zachary Masters; sister, Ilene Robert (Edmond).

June was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Myrtle Goff; infant daughter, Donna Masters; brothers, Charles Goff, Michael-Royce Goff, James Goff; and sisters, Soleta Henley, Rita Goff, Janene Scott.
