Dorothy Colleen
Ott Suehs
Dec 17, 1926 — Aug 7, 2021
Castroville
Dorothy Colleen Ott Suehs, of Castroville, Texas, made her journey home to Heaven on August 7, 2021, at the age of 94. She was born December 17, 1926, in Hobson, Texas, the oldest of four daughters born to Louis Charles Ott and Annie Swartz Ott.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Eugene "Gene" Suehs; granddaughter, Cassandra Suehs; and two sisters, Betty Hendrickson and Katherine "Bobbie" Reynolds.
She is survived by her two children, Elisa Suehs and Mark Suehs (Sherri DeFord); grandchildren, Christopher Suehs, Mark Suehs (Paige) and Monica Suehs; five great-grandchildren; sister, Rosemary Reeves (Royce); and several nieces and nephews.
After graduating early at the age of 16 from Fox Tech High School in San Antonio in 1942, she went to work for the government. She was secretary to a 4-star general and six other Generals at Fort Sam Houston during her twelve years of employment there.
She married Eugene "Gene" Suehs on May 4, 1954, at St. Peter Prince of Apostles Catholic Church in San Antonio. Dorothy and Gene made their home in Castroville and opened a family business, Western Auto and Appliance Store, which was also the local bus station. Dorothy also helped Gene when he became a real estate agent/broker.
Dorothy was very active in the Castroville community. She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society, Castro Garden Club (President), Castroville Chamber of Commerce, Castroville Conservation Society, Castro Colonies Heritage Association, American Legion Weiss-Wurzbach Post 460 Auxiliary, Friends of Landmark Inn, and various charitable organizations. She received an award from the Governor of Texas for her outstanding volunteer work, including her work for the American Red Cross. As a former "First Lady" of Castroville, she was named "Castroville Citizen of the Year" in the 1990's.
Dorothy was loyal to her community and loyal to her family. She was Gene's primary caregiver during his final years with Alzheimer's until he passed away. Dorothy saw life as an adventure, and after Gene's passing, the adventure continued. Dorothy began to travel the world with her daughter Elisa. Although she loved to see other places, Dorothy was proud to be an American. From her humble beginnings, she was the epitome of living the American Dream. Dorothy loved life, and she lived it until the day the good Lord called her home.
She will be missed by many, but her memory will live on in the lessons she taught all of us; the lesson of kindness, faith, adventure, beauty, and her never ending trust in God.
