Von Ormy

Obituary

Donald Lee Masters, Sr., 85 of Von Ormy, passed away on May 24, 2021. He was born November 28, 1935 in Bentonville, Arkansas, one of thirteen children born to Pat Cleburne Masters and Maude Anderson Masters.

He was raised in Castroville, TX with his siblings and was full of stories about his youth running around with his brothers and friends Huglo Lee Mumme and George Love.   On February 12, 1955, he wed Elsie June Goff Masters. They eloped and got married in Seguin, TX where they could apply for a license and get married the same day. Don was drafted in the Army in 1958 and served two years while stationed at Fort Irwin in Barstow, California. After the Army Don and June returned briefly to Castroville before permanently settling in the area of Von Ormy, near the community of Somerset in 1967 where they raised two sons and enjoyed their four grandchildren.

A jack of all trades Don was and a do-it-yourselfer.  He tried his hand at many different occupations. He worked on horseback at Briggs Ranch, did mechanic work which he learned by helping out in his dad's garage, worked road construction and eventually retired as an electrician, a trade he learned from his good friend and supervisor John Lightfoot.

Don loved to fish and hunt in his younger years and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.  He seemed to believe the team could actually hear him yelling and cheering from his couch. Don also liked to dance to country western music and that love of dancing led him to his lifelong love June.  They never forgot how to "cut a rug" on the dance floor at weddings and family gatherings.

Don Masters was a dedicated husband, father and loving uncle and grandfather who was affectionately known as "Uncle Donnie" or "Grandpa" to everyone who knew him.

Survivors include his sons, Donald L. Masters, Jr. (Janis) and Randall Masters, Sr. (Alma); grandchildren, Randall Masters, Jr., Samantha Masters, Brandon Masters and Zachary Masters; brothers, Louis Masters, Jimmy Masters (Darla); sister, Evelyn Dittlinger; in-laws, Dorothy Masters, Ilene Robert (Edmond) Leroy Eardley and Clarence Giffert.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Pat C. and Maude Masters; wife, June Masters; infant daughter, Donna Masters; brothers, Harold, Earl, Bobby, Charles and Pete Masters; sisters, Ilene Lowther, Frances Kramer, Geraldine "Jerry" Eardley and Eula Giffert; in-laws, Mary Frances Masters, Leo Dittlinger, Wautena Masters, Charles Goff, Michael-Royce Goff, James Goff, Soleta Henley, Rita Goff, Janene Scott.
