Daniel Anthony
Cerna
Jan 24, 1925 — Feb 21, 2021
San Antonio
Daniel Anthony Cerna passed away on February 21, 2021 at the age of 96. He was born January 24, 1925 in San Antonio to Lucas Cerna and Antonia Raba Cerna.
Daniel graduated from Central Catholic and earned a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. On September 5, 1947, he married Rosalie Gottardy, the beginning of a seventy-two-year love story. They were blessed with eight children, twenty-one grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Licensed as an architect, his firm designed numerous churches and other projects, including the Hilton Palacio del Rio. From an early age his passion was flying. Daniel built his own airplane and helped develop San Geronimo Air Park, where he built his home with the help of his son, Danny, Jr.
Always interested in science, astronomy, and the possibility of life on other planets, Daniel was a great source of ideas for school science projects for his children and grandchildren. He was the "contractor" for a family cabin built on the Frio River by two of his daughters and their husbands, the site of many family gatherings. He loved to sing and play his harmonica; Daniel was scrupulously honest and a faithful Catholic.
Daniel is survived by his children, Sharon Baughman (Peter), Karen Halamuda (David), Martha Cerna, Tina Sanders (Ron), Barbara Cerna (Richard DiBaggio), Michael Cerna (Traci) and Stephen Cerna (Shannon Savage-Cerna).
Daniel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalie; son, Daniel Cerna, Jr.; granddaughter, Hanna Cerna; sister, Virginia Joseph.
The family wishes to thank Regina Villareal for her help over the past two years and neighbor Mike Guerra for his kindness.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at 10 am at St. Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church, 6150 Roft Road, San Antonio, Texas.
Please Note : COVID protocols will be followed. Face coverings are required and social distancing shall be practiced.
