Obituary

Charles "Charlie" Jerome Haby, of Castroville, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born on December 25, 1935, in Hondo, Texas, one of nine children born to James Ulrich Haby and Marie Mildred (Iltis) Haby.

Charlie graduated from St. Louis High School in 1954 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, followed by the Army Reserves for four years.

On May 11, 1958, he married the love of his life, Marilyn "Maggie" Yvonne Haby, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. Together they shared sixty-eight years of marriage, raising three children and building a life rooted in faith, family, and the Medina County community.

A lifelong member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Charlie faithfully served his parish and community for decades. He belonged to the St. Louis Men's Society for seventy-three years and was also a member of the San Antonio Executive Club, Quihi Gun Club, Medina Valley Hunters Club, and Castroville Catfish Club. His service included the Castroville City Zoning Board, St. Louis Cemetery Board, Parish Council, and co-chaired St. Louis Day Church Celebration. He especially enjoyed the fellowship of preparing for the annual celebration alongside family and friends—gathering firewood, making sausage, and working on the sausage cooking crew.

Charlie spent forty years with Curry Motor Freight and Central Freight Lines, retiring in 1998 as a Salesman after a successful career. While he enjoyed his work, his heart was always on the ranch.

As a fourth-generation Medina County rancher, Charlie took great pride in caring for the family land and preserving a way of life that had been passed down through generations. Whether tending cattle, working the ranch, playing a round of golf with friends, hunting, or setting trotlines in hopes of catching a big catfish, he found his greatest joy outdoors. He appreciated hard work, valued honesty, and never met a stranger. More than anything, he treasured time spent with his family and was happiest when everyone was together.

Charlie will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, faithful Catholic, respected rancher, and loyal friend. His quiet strength, steady character, generous spirit, and unmistakable sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. The values he lived by—faith, humility, hard work, and love of family—will continue through the generations that follow.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Marilyn "Maggie" Haby of Castroville; daughter, Polly Edlund (Eric) of Castroville; sons, Troy Haby (Lisa) of Boerne and Brad Haby (Tammy) of Leon Springs; grandchildren, Jacob Edlund, Holden Haby, and Hollis Haby; brothers, Fr.
