Obituary

Barbara Lois Poore Weir was born in Pasadena, California, on October 21, 1922, to Theodore R. Poore and Anna Elizabeth Poore. She passed away on July 27, 2021, at the age of 98.

She lived in Pasadena growing up, attending Pasadena High School and Pasadena City College. She was a competitive collegiate swimmer and was preparing to compete in the Olympic trials while in college, where she met the love of her life, Richard Weir. Her schooling and competitive swimming were interrupted due to World War II.

Richard joined the Army Air Corps shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and with an imminent call to duty, he and Barbara eloped to Las Vegas, Nevada, to get married with their parents in tow. Richard was called to active duty shortly thereafter, and their first of seventy-eight years of marriage together began with them apart for the first of many forced separations in thirty-two years of military service.

Barbara was the model homemaker of a military husband, raising three children while moving over twenty times during Richard's service in WWII, the Korean War and later on during the cold war with the Soviet Union. She became an accomplished artist excelling in many mediums including ceramics, sewing, jewelry and hat making, leather tooling and tole painting. Her art works are cherished by friends and family.

After military retirement in 1975, Richard and Barbara relocated to southern California, first in San Marcos, followed by Valley Center and Fallbrook. She continued her artwork in retirement while assisting Richard in farming citrus, avocados, and Protea.

She outlived most of her friends and family members and is survived by her three children, Dixie Christy of Springtown, Texas, Linda Myers (Rusty) of Van Buren, Arkansas, and Ted Weir (Schiela) of Warrenton, Virginia. She had an adoring family of six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; plus lots of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard who passed away in July 2020; her sister, Betty Gilbert; her brother, Ralph Poore, and.

"Gramma sweetie. Love of my life, tower of my strength, beauty of my courage, crutch of my declining years," She had a marvelous sense of humor, teaching this to each of her grandchildren when they requested something – and it's still recited today.

A combined memorial service for Barbara and Richard is planned for Friday, October 22, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. at Blue Skies of Texas-West. Interment will follow at 11:15 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
