U.S. VeteranMajor William “Bill” Eugene MacDaniel, USAF retired, age 88, of Air Force Village II, San Antonio, TX, was promoted to glory Aug. 29, 2012. Bill was born Jan. 4, 1924 to parents, Cedric and Margaret Rose Bonney MacDaniel in Connersville, IN. He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jane Margaret MacDaniel and a brother, James MacDaniel. Bill served his country as a command pilot during WWII and the Korean Conflict, retiring from the USAF in June 1962 after 23 years of service. Major MacDaniel was originally in the 301st heavy bomb group. He flew the maximum amount of missions during WWII. During the war he flew B-17's and was stationed at Foggia, Italy. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and many other medals. He received a Masters in Sociology and had a second career as a Professor of Sociology at Niagara University in New York. On Aug. 1, 1953 he wed the love of his life, Shirley Katherine Chap at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley MacDaniel of San Antonio; daughters, Katherine DiPronio and husband Ron of Round Rock, TX, Deborah Ontko and husband Bruce of Williamsburg, VA, and son, John William MacDaniel and wife Cathleen of Doylestown, PA; grandchildren, Daniel DiPronio and his wife Ashley, Margaret DiPronio, Alexandra Ontko, Catherine Ontko, Evan MacDaniel, Lukas MacDaniel and Ava MacDaniel; brother, Dr. Donald L. MacDaniel of Connersville, IN. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. Interment with full military honors will follow at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery. “He’s the greatest man I have ever known, he was my hero...the big guy.” Arrangements with Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home.
